Paula's Notes:
Stretching three city blocks in the Tacoma Dome district, you’ll find Freighthouse Square. Once a terminus for the Old Milwaukee Railroad, the Square now houses a multitude of shops and services. You’ll find an art gallery, local artisans offering their crafts, wine, antiques, massage therapists, etc. In addition, let’s not forget an international food court that will kick your taste buds into high gear – Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek and even a Subway sandwich establishment. The majority of the casual dining stands are locally run. (The author would like to note that one of her most favoritest eateries is in Freighthouse Square. Palace Mediterranean offers incredibly delicious Greek fare served by two very gracious hosts/owners, Mark and Sarada.)
Additionally, Freighthouse Square is now virtually the main public transportation hubal for Tacoma presenting a variety modes from which to choose – Link Light Rail (rail system to downtown Tacoma), Sounder Commuter Rail (Seattle commuter – great for Seahawk & Mariner games), Greyhound and the Golden Pacific Railroad Sightseer Excursion Tour.
The Golden Pacific Reading 2100 steam locomotive treks 22 miles for a three-hour long trip, complete w/BBQ lunch, from Tacoma to Fredrickson. Reservations required. Tickets $25-$50 www.ticketmaster.com
