Boulder as interpreted by Suzan K. Heglin:

Boulder started out as a wintering spot for the local Indians. Then it was a support town for miners working in the foothills. It was also a pass-through for travelers. Boulder has maintained its pioneering spirit, as there are more start-ups in this county than almost any other county in the U.S. It is also a stop-over spot for people traveling across the country, and those heading up into the mountains. But it's more than that. Chief Niwot, a tribal leader of the Southern Arapaho Indian tribe in 1860, is said to have put a curse on anyone passing through Boulder. The first part of the curse says: "People seeing the beauty of this valley will want to stay . . ."

Coloradans are likely to come to Boulder to shop on Pearl Street. Unique shops and eateries, street performers add to a feeling of being "elsewhere." On the hottest days Boulder Creek is full of people navigating the mercurial waters in truck inner tubes.

Summer nights there are concerts on Pearl Street or the 29th Street mall, folk dancing on the plaza and an outdoor cinema. Just outside the city of Boulder is the Celestial Seasonings tea company where the tour and the tea is free. And, of course, one of the major attractions to Boulder is the hiking. 38,000 acres of open space are open to the public.

In the winter Eldora ski resort is just a hop up the mountain.

The second half of Chief Niwot's curse is ". . . and their staying will be the undoing of the beauty." Maybe this is why the locals are distinctly concerned about conserving the open space and protecting the environment. And this is what has earned them the reputation of "Colorado hippies." Don't worry, when in Boulder, just remember to recycle and you won't get hurt . . .
